A practice that keeps memory in color, matter and symbol — returning heritage to contemporary language.
Alejandro Oliva is a Cuban visual artist. His painting —abstract, material and mixed media— is born from Afro-Cuban heritage: its symbols, its codes and its ritual life.
He works in layers, because that is how memory is built: glaze upon glaze, matter telling a deeper story each time.
Matter is his language. Pigment, gesture and symbol come together to manifest what cannot be seen: a faith, a memory, a resistance.
Afro-Cuban heritage is not a theme in his work: it is the backbone. Everything he paints carries rhythm, texture and code — the way that culture breathes.
He works slowly and in layers: glazes, matter, sign, repetition. Each work passes through many lives before it stays still.
